Health Data

Overdose deaths and health insurance for every US state and county.

CDC's provisional drug overdose deaths for every state, by drug, and every county, updated monthly, and the Census Bureau's estimates of who lacks health insurance in every county and state since 2008.

What you get

  • Plain files over HTTPS

Each series for each place as a small JSON or CSV file, plus every dataset as one CSV or Parquet file. No key or signup.

  • Versions you can cite

Every update gets a version id, and a pinned URL always returns the same data. The first version of each month is kept for good, so results stay reproducible.

  • Checked before publishing

Each update is validated against its contract. If a check fails, the last good version stays live.

  • Licenses up front

Every dataset names its source, its license, the exact credit line and whether commercial use is allowed.

Datasets

CDC's provisional count of drug overdose deaths in the 12 months ending each month, for every state and the US since 2015, by drug: all drugs, opioids, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, heroin, cocaine, psychostimulants such as methamphetamine, and more, with CDC's prediction of the final count.

    Time series Monthly

  • Health insurance coverage by county and state

The share and number of people without health insurance in every US county and state each year since 2008, for people under 65, adults 18 to 64 and children under 19, from the Census Bureau's Small Area Health Insurance Estimates, with 90 percent margins of error.
